Choosing a Quality Hospice for You or Your Loved Ones

Depending on where you live there could be one or several hospice organizations serving your community. If there are multiple hospices in your area, you can decide which hospice you want to care for you or your loved one and let your physician know which one you prefer.

Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro (HPCG) has developed some questions to help you identify factors that may be important to you and your family when selecting a hospice.

1. Is the hospice Medicare-Certified?

Yes. HPCG is Medicare-Certified. Your physician and HPCG’s medical director must certify that you have a terminal illness. This is a condition which will likely result in a life expectancy of approximately six months or less. HPCG will also create a special team to care for you which may include nurses, physicians, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains and volunteers.

2. Is the organization a National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) member and does it comply with all aspects of its standards for hospice programs?

NHPCO is the largest nonprofit membership organization representing hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the United States. The organization is committed to improving end-of-life care and expanding access to hospice care with the goal of profoundly enhancing quality of life for people dying in America and their loved ones.

3. Is the hospice accredited by a national organization?

Yes. HPCG is  accredited by The Accreditation Commission for Health Care, Inc (ACHC), which is a third-party, nonprofit organization that has developed the highest national standards for providers to be surveyed against in order to illustrate their ability to effectively and efficiently deliver quality health care products and services to consumers. 4. If I need to go to a hospital or nursing home which ones does/doesn’t the hospice work with?

5. What extra services does the hospice offer?

HPCG provides bereavement counseling to anyone in the community that is grieving the loss of a loved one, regardless of whether or not their loved one was a hospice patient. At the Counseling and Education Center, family members and caregivers will find support, encouragement and tools for coping with these challenges. The Counseling and Education Center provides individual counseling, group support and educational workshops.

6. How long has the hospice been operating in the community?

HPCG has been serving Guilford County and surrounding areas since 1980.

7. What screening and type of training do hospice volunteers receive before they are placed with patients and families?

Volunteers at HPCG are required to fill out an application and a criminal background check is performed. All volunteers are required to attend a two-hour information session and additional training depending on the area in which they volunteer.

8. What is the organization’s governance structure?

HPCG is a nonprofit organization that is governed by a board of directors.

9. Is the hospice a We Honor Veterans Partner?

Yes. HPCG has achieved Level IV status in the national We Honor Veterans program, the highest level possible, ensuring Veterans receive quality comfort and support at the end of life.

10. Does the hospice own or operate a care facility to provide home-like care in a hospice residence hospital or nursing home?

Yes. Beacon Place is HPCG’s very own hospice home with 14 private rooms, located on the beautiful 14.75 acre HPCG campus at 2500 Summit Avenue in Greensboro, NC. Beacon Place serves patients with a prognosis of two to four weeks, and whose caregivers are unable to provide the needed care. Beacon Place offers the finest health care. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with both nurses and nursing assistants.

11. What services do volunteers provide at the hospice provider?

HPCG volunteers provide direct patient care support, Kids Path program support, speakers bureau and health fair support and assistance at fundraising special events.
