Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro Celebrates Hospice Aide Week
June 6, 2013
Each day more than 4.5 million nursing assistants provide hands-on care to patients at the end-of-life. And, the number is only growing. It is estimated that in the next 25 years, 700,000 new nursing assistant positions will be needed. At Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro (HPCG), hospice aides gently assist with personal care for patients.
Every year, HPCG celebrates national hospice aide week in June to promote awareness about hospice and palliative care in its local community, as well as recognize the work they do. Since our services are not defined by a place, they are available wherever the patient is living – in a private residence, nursing facility, assisted-living community or our very own hospice home, Beacon Place.
While hospice aides provide personal care to patients in their homes at the direction of a registered nurse, many times, they spend the most time with the patient and the family. In fact, many of our patients tell us that their hospice aides became a part of their extended family.
Hospice aides also help family caregivers by being an extra support system. These highly trained individuals assist with the patient’s personal hygiene, feeding and other activities of daily living. Their support allows families to once again be a family by allowing caregivers to spend more quality time with their loved ones.
HPCG, a nonprofit organization serving Guilford County and surrounding areas for more than 30 years, is situated on an eight-acre campus at 2500 Summit Avenue. HPCG provides physical, emotional and spiritual support for children and adults faced with a life-limiting illness, as well as their caregivers and families.
